Joy.
We often refer to joy as an emotion, but it is also an action. In the Psalms, the psalmist reminds us to be joyful in our worship of God. Sing, dance, play instruments in all seasons, and be filled with joy and devotion to our God. Their words motivate us to express our love, happiness, and jubilation in creative ways. When we corporately worship at church, often we are moved in the same way as we sing praises. Our souls are filled with joy as we sing and worship Jesus. The songs touch us deep within, to our hearts, and our emotions stir with great joy!
Joy is also an action. Jesus brings joy to life! As he walks the earth, he is continually living out a life filled with joy, regardless of the persecution and false accusations. Paul speaks to us of this as we face all seasons, not focusing on the hardships we are facing, but choosing joy in the middle of our mess.
Today, we are starting a new series, Joy in the Wilderness. Let’s focus on God’s Word this week, and all it says about joy. Here are a few to get us started. I would love to hear your favorite scripture on joy too!
Isaiah 49:13 says,
Sing, O heavens!
Be joyful, O earth!
And break out in singing, O mountains!
For the Lord has comforted His people,
And will have mercy on His afflicted. (NKJV)
Psalms 16:11 tells us,
You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (NKJV)
Philippians 4:4 is a call to rejoice,
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! (NKJV)
